Serial data transfer
Serial protocols are rapidly being replaced by IP solutions already in industrial, conservative environments. The advantages of IP networks are clear - interoperability between devices, the ability to use conventional structured cabling and simple setup and control via PC-based software. Despite all this, thousands and thousands of older, expensive but still well-functioning serial-only devices are still used in industry. Westermo has products to connect these devices to modern networks.
The robust serial concept reduces the investment required to provide data access to serial devices and enables a gradual migration from legacy systems to new ones. If you need to remotely control or monitor a serial device, please contact a member of our staff.</p
Serial Solution Options
Optical redundant ring and connection of serial and Ethernet devices at required ring locations. The Lynx serial server has two integrated RS-232/422/485 ports and allows the same or different baud rates to be used.</p
Using old, existing wires
The Wolwerine concept allows you to transmit transparent Ethernet over a metallic pair at high speed over a long distance. The speed and communication distance depends on the condition and quality of the infrastructure, but in ideal cases up to 15.3 Mbit/s and a distance of up to 15km can be achieved. The device can also be equipped with a RS-232/422/485 serial port so that serial data can be transmitted in addition to Ethernet data. Link to Wolwerine products - here.</p
Easy and efficient migration to IP
Migration from serial devices can be gradual and simple. You can interconnect IP networks via a serial link.
Modbus is a communication protocol developed by Modicon systems and is still used by many systems around the world. The former ModbusRTU and ModbusASCII protocols are now being replaced by ModbusTCP, which is based on the IP protocol. To assist with the migration, Westermo thus supports a Modbus gateway for conversion between these protocols.
