Reliable train networks

In the last few years, the use of IP technology has become the norm for establishing data communications used by train control systems (TCMS), passenger information systems (PIS) and information systems. Robust switches with a variety of IP network protocols are used to build these networks to handle absolutely critical applications in train operations.

As more and more different types of devices need to be connected to these networks, these switches are both high port count (20) and high density, resulting in reduced volume and weight of equipment. PoE (Power over Ethernet) technology is an ideal solution to this problem, where end devices can be powered via network cable, resulting in significant cost and space savings. The backbone network is part of the mandatory equipment of new train sets. The goal is to have a duplicated circuit across the entire train so that in the event of any outage, data transmission across the network is not affected. Westermo provides these functions with Viper switches that meet the IEC 61375 standard.

To save on cabling, it is advisable to transmit train control data together with other systems such as information, camera or passenger entertainment systems. However, this requires a sophisticated level of cyber security to prevent passengers from connecting to the train control system. Westermo meets all these requirements.
