In the world of factory automation, Ethernet has very quickly replaced serial communication as the preferred method of data exchange. All PLC, HMI, I/O, inverter and drive automation devices now have a standard RJ-45 interface. However, it is not possible to replace all the serial devices at once, as this would be both very costly, but also not necessary to replace the functioning serial device. Westermo therefore equips its Ethernet products with RS-232/422/485 serial ports so that these devices can be easily accessed remotely via Ethernet. In general, factories are difficult environments for reliable communication, given the ambient interference associated with manufacturing that affects communication quite a bit or completely.

Reliability and trouble-free operation are a prerequisite in this industry, as the entire production can be compromised if the network fails. Robust communications equipment is the solution.
